Protect citizens from Defamation

The people of the Commonwealth of Redmont,
through their elected Representatives in the Congress and the force of law ordained to that Congress by the people through the constitution, do hereby enact the following provisions into law:

1 - Short Title and Enactment

(1) This Act may be cited as the 'No More Defamation Act.'

(2) This Act shall be enacted immediately upon its signage.

(3) This Act has been authored by Speaker Unitymaster.

(4) This Act has been co-sponsored by Senator v__d.

2 - Reasons

(1) The current defamation law is flawed and outdated.

3 - Repeal

(1) The Defamation Act October 2020 shall hereby be repealed in its entirety.

(a) The Slander Act shall remain rescinded.

4 - Definitions

(1) Define defamation as:

(a) Defamation is a false statement and/or communication that injures a third party's reputation. The tort of defamation includes both libel and slander.

(2) Define libel as:

(a) A method of defamation expressed by documents, signs, published media, or any communication embodied in physical form that is injurious to a person's reputation, exposes a person to public hatred, contempt or ridicule, or injures a person in his/her business, profession or organization.

(3) Define Slander as:

(a) A false statement, usually made through either discord or in-game messages, which defames another person’s reputation, business, profession, or organization.

5 - Punishments

(1) Damages caused by defamation, if proven in a civil court of law, shall be paid out as determined by the presiding Judicial Officer.

(a) In addition, the courts may require the tortfeasor of defamation to issue an apology, which may be made public and/or to the parties with which the defamatory communication was made.
